Here’s a cross section of my writing and content creation work which includes course series, teacher resource books, digital and video content, and methodology articles.

When Life first came out in 2013, it was a game-changer in ELT publishing. We took National Geographic images and made them a central feature of the book. One teacher in France reviewed the book as: “A breakthrough. No other text book offers what this does.” Life was an ELTons award finalist in 2013.

My working relationship with Oxford University Press goes back to 2000, when I started reviewing titles for them. This led to them asking me to write teacher’s books and eventually student books. The first levels of Business Result came out in 2006, and the series has continued as a popular business English course title ever since.

It’s rare these days to approach a publisher with your own idea for a book, but in 2013 Pavilion ELT accepted my proposal for ETpedia offering 1000 tips, ideas and activities. ETpedia then evolved into a series which was an ELTons finalist in 2017. ETpedia Business English won the BESIG award for innovation in 2018.

In his Modern English Teacher review of ETpedia Materials Writing, Brian Brennan wrote: “It’s common for glowing reviews to conclude with something like ‘This is a must for every teachers’ room’, but I cannot say that here; in my opinion, this is a must for every teacher.” The book forms the basis of my training courses in materials writing.

No Image Available Critical Thinking in ELT
Donald Freeman (University of Michigan) wrote: "The book brings together the authors' views of critical thinking with their experiences working with teachers on these ideas. Paul Dummett and John Hughes have done a wonderful job of creating a text that bridges these important ideas with various ways of implementing them." It was an ELTons finalist in 2020.

No Image Available World Link Fourth Edition
This series already had a proven track record, so when National Geographic Learning asked me to write a new upper intermediate level (Level 4) and rewrite the existing Level 2, it was a great opportunity. The books have a great sense of fun with a focus on developing fluency.

I worked on the lower levels of this established series to bring out the third edition. The aim was to make sure the content is authentic while at the same time keeping the language level at A1 and A2. I think we achieved that.

No Image Available A Practical Introduction to Teacher Training in ELT
In her review, Sandy Millin wrote: “I wish I'd had this very useful book when I started out as a teacher trainer …I'm sure I'll end up referring to this many times, and will inevitably use it with up-and-coming senior teachers and ADoSes too. Thanks for writing this much-needed guide, John!”
